Fly to heaven. (Not without thatched roofs)

Luxury Travel Tips

The other day, one of my readers greatly surprised and puzzled me. It all started with his letter, which contained a request to help with the choice of a hotel for a heavenly holiday at sea. Let me quote: “Oleg! Good day to you! … I am writing to you in the hope that you will help me solve a problem that has come in my way. … Now I decided to take a “real” vacation in my understanding — namely, to fly to the islands to “paradise”. I am writing to you to advise me where to fly – the Seychelles, the Maldives or French Polynesia. I have never been there before, and in view of the fact that I have not had a rest for a long time, the requirements and expectations for the upcoming vacation are a priori high. … I would like to live in a good water villa on stilts (but with amenities – not with a thatched roof, but with a more or less modern, but harmonious design). The hotel on Bora Bora Four seasons did not really like the photo, because it seemed that the villas were too close to each other and there were a lot of them … Please help – I’m at a dead end and I don’t know what to do … It may end up that I just won’t go anywhere … PS The budget is not limited.

After analyzing this letter, I decided that the main request in it is in three parameters: 1. comfort level, 2. “privacy” (that is, that no one bothers to relax) and 3. tropical climate and the sea. “Without thatched roofs” and “on piles” – this, in my opinion, is secondary. Well, that is, it doesn’t matter, because. does not play a special role. Well, I now quote my answer: “Hello! Usually I do not consult for free – they often write to me with requests to recommend something, and I cannot answer everything. But since your letter gives the impression of a real request for help, I decided to answer you. I can advise the North Island hotel in the Seychelles, this is an island hotel (that is, there is nothing else on this reserve island except this one hotel), it is very expensive, but very good. The villas, however, are not on stilts, but are very comfortable (they call this approach barefoot luxury, “barefoot luxury”, but this term should not be frightened). Well decorated, spacious, with separate studios, swimming pools and more. The service is very good, the kitchen is excellent and all related services are provided. The villas are all at a tangible distance from each other, there are 11 or 12 of them, guests see each other only in the bar, which there is no particular need to go to, since everything can be obtained in the villa – dinner, lunch, and any drinks. A magnificent spa center, which brings you to your senses in just a couple of sessions. Have a good rest!

North Island

North Island

North Island

But what was my surprise when, instead of words of gratitude, I received in response only a link to a certain review about this hotel, left on one of the Russian-language sites. In this review, our compatriot, who was vacationing on North Island, in paints and with photographs, talks about how … the ceiling collapsed on it, and this happened when he and his wife were sleeping: the rotten beam, which caused the collapse, almost fell right on their heads . They narrowly escaped injury. The hotel management promised generous compensation, but, according to the author, this promise was never fulfilled. To my horror, I recognized in the photographs the very villa in which I myself stayed.

Creepy story. I haven’t heard anything about this before. But I think that not a single similar hotel is insured against such a force majeure – in the Seychelles, and in the Maldives, and in French Polynesia, all these villas are built using approximately the same technology and the climate is approximately the same everywhere – humid , and the tree tends to rot … Actually, I am more than sure that if this case with the collapse of the ceiling took place in reality (that is, if there is no repair in the photo, for example, which, by the way, really took place there some time ago), then such an incident will never happen again. After all, now there, probably, they conduct regular checks for the wear and tear of buildings.

And I thought. About what else can be compared in terms of service level with the mentioned Seychelles hotel and came to the conclusion that yes, there is such a place. This is Wakaya Island in the Fiji archipelago.

The Wakaya Club & Spa

Wakaya is perhaps one of the most exclusive destinations for a tropical coastal holiday. Charismatic rocks, clear water, pristine beaches. Tropical deer and exotic birds live on beautiful hills overgrown with banana trees, and peace and bliss hang in the air. Classical paradise. The Wakaya Club & Spa hotel located here consists of nine cottages (more precisely, the so-called bures – a kind of cottage complexes made of bamboo, with all amenities … and yes, with thatched roofs). Around them are neat English lawns and coconut palms. The windows of the villas look directly at the beach with coral sand.

The hotel, as stated in its booklet, works “for those who have everything and who have had enough of all this.” That is, the bet is made on proximity to nature, everything around is wooden, bamboo, handmade, wicker furniture, mattresses are filled with dried algae. Light relaxing music and the quiet rustle of the waves sound. There is not even glass in the windows, the matter was limited to mosquito nets and wooden blinds, which, when open, make the rooms very light and good. Here my correspondent may object that, they say, what kind of luxury is this, if there is not even glass in the windows? To this I will answer as follows: the most real. Luxury is not just when everything is sleek, beautiful and “downright luxurious”. And this is a real, genuine, limited edition. By the way, Bill and Melinda Gates, Michelle Pfeiffer with her husband, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, Jim Carrey, Celine Dion stayed here. And they were satisfied.

The island has a magnificent (both in terms of decoration and from a purely gastronomic point of view) Palm Grove restaurant. And also: swimming pool, fishing, including underwater, horseback riding, tennis court, golf, fitness center, spa center, free Wi-Fi, diving, excursions on a glass bottom boat, through which coral reefs are perfectly visible and fish. And all this – only for nine guests. Do you understand what I’m talking about?

Have a nice holiday!
